College Expedition Series: Stop # 1 --- Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
College Expedition Series: Stop #1 — Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
Every journey begins with a first step, and ours started on August 2, 2025 with a drive from Elk Grove, CA down the California coast. The first stop on our college expedition was Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, a university that naturally made the list because of my son’s interest in mechanical engineering. Known for its strong engineering programs and “Learn by Doing” philosophy, Cal Poly was a campus we couldn’t miss.
Exploring the Math & Engineering Buildings
We couldn’t resist peeking through the windows into classrooms and labs, imagining the energy of students at work during the week. My son lingered at these spots, picturing himself in those spaces.
The quiet halls reminded us that while the campus was still, the possibilities inside those rooms were alive and waiting.
Campus Life & Recreation
From academics to recreation, we wanted to see how students live and thrive here. We wandered toward the recreation center, a hub of activity even on a weekend. What stood out immediately were the rows of bicycle racks spread across the campus. It felt like a campus built for movement, for students who balance academics with an active lifestyle.
My son, who dreams of joining a college track team, was especially eager to see the track facilities. Even though he isn’t certain whether he’ll have the opportunity, standing there gave him a glimpse of what it might feel like to train and compete at the collegiate level.
First Impressions
Cal Poly SLO gave us a strong start to our expedition. The blend of academic rigor, outdoor culture, and supportive facilities made it easy to see why so many students thrive here. For my son, it was a chance to imagine himself not just as a student, but as part of a larger campus community. For me, it was a gift to walk beside him, to share in his excitement, and to begin this journey together.
Looking Ahead
This was only the first stop on our path south, but it set the tone beautifully. Each campus we visit will add another layer to the story — another chance to compare, reflect, and dream.
